“Anything that we recommend, it goes back to how comfortable we feel with understanding both the risks and benefits,” says Dr. Shikha Gupta, a board-certified allergist and immunologist. “The biggest downside of supplements is that we don’t have that data.”

“It’s also very safe, inexpensive, and excess vitamin C is easily excreted by the body,” Dr. Davidson adds.
- Quercetin: Found in foods such as onions and berries, quercetin is believed to inhibit histamine release and has shown potential in early studies to lessen allergy symptoms like sneezing.
While quercetin supplements are available, Dr. Gupta recommends consuming quercetin-rich foods for better benefits.
- Probiotics: Emerging studies suggest that the gut microbiome may influence allergic conditions, including eczema and hay fever. However, further research is needed to confirm these findings.
Potential Risks of Certain Supplements
It’s important to note that not all natural supplements are safe for everyone. Some may exacerbate allergy symptoms or lead to adverse effects. For instance:
- Stinging Nettle: Often marketed as a natural antihistamine, its effectiveness is inconclusive. There is a risk it could worsen symptoms if you are allergic to certain plants.
- Butterbur: This supplement may cause allergic reactions in individuals sensitive to plants like ragweed. Additionally, improperly processed butterbur can pose serious health risks.

While many turn to supplements for relief, healthcare professionals typically recommend proven methods for managing allergies, including:
