A recent study highlights the importance of a diet rich in flavonoids—powerful antioxidants found in common foods such as tea, apples, and citrus fruits. Incorporating these flavonoid-rich foods into your meals could contribute significantly to healthier aging.

A new study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that a diet abundant in flavonoids—like black tea, berries, citrus fruits, and apples—may help reduce the risks associated with unhealthy aging. Key issues addressed include frailty, impaired physical function, and poor mental health.

According to Dr. Nicola Bondonno, a postdoctoral research fellow at Edith Cowan University in Australia, this research builds upon earlier studies linking increased flavonoid consumption to a lower risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and dementia. Dr. Bondonno stated, “Our latest research adds to this by showing that high flavonoid intake is also linked to a lower risk of physical frailty, poor mental health, and reduced physical function as people age.”

A Flavonoid-Rich Diet and Aging

Dr. Bondonno’s team analyzed data from the Nurses’ Health Study (NHS) and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study (HPFS), which have been ongoing since the 1970s and ’80s. Participants regularly complete dietary questionnaires to provide insights into their health and any new diseases they may have developed.

For this specific study, the researchers focused on individuals aged 60 and older, gathering data from the NHS from 1990 to 2014 and the HPFS from 2006 to 2018. This extensive research involved over 62,000 women and 23,000 men.

To assess the impact of flavonoids on aging, researchers monitored the frequency of consumption of flavonoid-rich foods such as:

  • Black tea
  • Blueberries
  • Strawberries
  • Apples
  • Citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruits)
  • Red wine

Based on servings consumed daily, a “flavodiet score” was developed. Dr. Bondonno explained, “This helps translate research into real-world advice and shows how whole diets, not just nutrients in isolation, support healthy aging.”

Higher flavodiet scores correlated with self-reported health metrics, revealing that individuals with the highest scores experienced:

  • A 15% lower risk of frailty
  • A 12% lower risk of impaired physical function
  • A 12% lower risk of poor mental health

Although results were less pronounced in men, those with higher flavodiet scores still showed improved mental health outcomes. Dr. Bondonno indicated that differences in results may arise from the duration of tracking rather than biological factors.

However, experts urge caution regarding these findings. Dr. Darshan Shah, a board-certified surgeon and longevity expert, noted, “This is an observational study based on food questionnaires every four years. Observational studies show no causality, just an association.”

He emphasized that other lifestyle factors, such as increased physical activity, may contribute to better aging outcomes among flavonoid consumers. Additionally, self-reported dietary habits may lead to inaccuracies, as memory can falter over time.

How Flavonoids Support Healthy Aging

If flavonoids indeed enhance healthy aging, what mechanisms are at play?

Similar to other antioxidants, flavonoids combat inflammation, which may prevent disease. Kathryn Piper, RDN, LD, NBC-HWC, states that flavonoids might support a unique process called autophagy. “Think of autophagy as the body’s way of cleaning house, getting rid of old, harmful cells to make way for new, healthy ones,” she explained.

Thanks to this cellular renewal process, flavonoid-rich foods could promote both physical and mental wellness as we age. Dr. Bondonno also mentioned that flavonoids might:

  • Reduce oxidative stress
  • Support healthy blood vessel function
  • Help maintain muscle mass

These combined benefits can positively affect multiple body systems, revealing that flavonoids may hold even more advantages than currently understood.

Should You Add More Flavonoid-Rich Foods to Your Diet?

While more research is essential before declaring high-flavonoid foods a “fountain of youth,” experts agree that enhancing your diet with these foods can promote healthy aging.

Maggie Moon, MS, RD, author of The MIND Diet: 2nd Edition, advises, “Everyone should consider including more flavonoid-rich foods in their diet to thrive in older adulthood.” Suggestions for incorporating these foods include:

  1. Start your day with a cup of green tea.
  2. Make a smoothie featuring blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries.
  3. Enjoy a small glass of 100% orange, concord, or wild blueberry juice with breakfast.
  4. Snack on apples with peanut butter.
  5. Indulge in a small portion of dark chocolate (70% or higher) for dessert.
  6. Enhance your meals with flavonoid-packed herbs like parsley and oregano.

Starting these dietary habits early is key. Kathryn Piper advises, “Start early and be consistent, ideally in midlife or sooner, to allow the protective effects to build up over time.”
