The study analyzed blood samples from 3,679 participants aged 56 and older who were part of the national Health and Retirement Study. The researchers studied epigenetic changes over six years, focusing on how environmental factors can switch gene activity on and off. They employed epigenetic clocks to quantify these changes.

“These clocks provide critical insights into how environmental exposures affect biological aging,” Choi noted. By correlating the participants’ biological age shifts with local heat index data, the study identified several areas with frequent extreme heat days, including:

  • Phoenix and Tucson in Arizona
  • Brownsville and Laredo in Texas
  • Miami and Tampa in Florida

Participants residing in these hotter regions experienced as much as 14 months of accelerated biological aging compared to those in cooler locations with fewer than 10 heat days annually.

While the results of this research may sound concerning, it’s important to highlight that the study demonstrates an association, not a direct cause-and-effect relationship. Choi emphasizes the need for caution when interpreting these findings.
